That blog post covers it quite well -- we contribute and integrate fairly deeply with the cloud native ecosystem. Most of us come from a background in that space and have even helped created some of the core projects in the foundation.
We don't currently have any plans to submit SpiceDB as a CNCF project, but we do follow almost all of the guidelines for projects in the ecosystem (license, COC, etc...). The short answer is that we don't feel comfortable assuming that the CNCF is the best place for our community. We'd rather grow the project's own community and make the decision for donating the project as a group. You can't really come back from a donation, so we take it very seriously. We did a podcast with the folks from KubeList discussing it a bit more: https://www.heavybit.com/library/podcasts/the-kubelist-podcast/ep-24-spicedb-with-jake-moshenko-and-jimmy-zelinskie-of-authzed/
